This October, Lanakila Pacific is thrilled to join thousands of organizations across the nation in recognizing and celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This annual commemoration acknowledges the important contributions to the nation’s economy and workforce made by people with disabilities. As an organization dedicated to championing employment opportunities and building independence for individuals with disabilities, we are proud to honor all the wonderful employees and participants who bring such great diversity and innovation to our ohana.
Did you know that…
· 1 in 5 individuals in the United States have a disability or a long-term health condition.
· People with disabilities are the largest minority group in the entire workforce.
· This group vastly underrepresented in workplaces with only about 30% of working age Americans with disabilities being employed. (Business Disability Forum)
· Nearly 83% of disabilities are acquired, whether due to an accident, illness, or genetic condition. (Business Disability Forum)
At Lanakila Pacific, it is our mission to create a more diverse and sustainable workforce. Employment Services is just one example of how we support individuals with disabilities. Participants of this program gain access to classes covering topics like interviewing, resume writing, and effective communication – all vital pieces to securing employment. And the program doesn’t stop there! Under the guidance of qualified job coaches, participants receive specialized 1-on-1 training and placement in hands-on paid work experiences with local businesses. Over the past year alone, 30 individuals with disabilities have successfully completed their training with various employers across the island. Many of them have even gone on to acquire permanent employment in their roles. Success!
As a pioneer in this field, it is our hope to inspire peer organizations to foster an environment where everyone can succeed. Lanakila Pacific supports people with disabilities on their journey towards independence through employment all year round. This month, and every month moving forward, we challenge you to join us in advocating for better accessibility and inclusivity for all.
