Our History
1939
Violet Kam, a special education teacher, starts a program to help people recuperate from tuberculosis.
1951
Named Lanakila Crafts, the organization sells Hawaiian crafts to support the ongoing rehabilitation program.
1953
The organization expands to include individuals with disabilities, in addition to those recuperating from tuberculosis.
1971
Lanakila Meals on Wheels—then called Honolulu Nutrition Program—begins as a lunch wagon in Aala Park. The new service provides Oahu seniors with opportunities to socialize and enjoy a nutritious lunch.
1972
The organization opens a Wahiawa facility to supply individuals with job training.
1976
Lanakila Crafts changes its name to Lanakila Rehabilitation Center to reflect its many programs supporting individuals on Oahu.
1985
A new kitchen and dining facility opens, expanding the organization’s capacity to feed seniors and community members.
1995
Lanakila Pacific Foundation—then called Lanakila Rehabilitation Center Foundation—is formed.
2008
The organization name is changed to Lanakila Pacific to reflect its growth as an organization.
2014
Lanakila Pacific celebrates its 75th anniversary.
2020
Lanakila Pacific supports the increased need on Oahu for meals and services amid the global COVID-19 pandemic.
