For more than a decade, Kevin brought drive and dedication to every shift at Lanakila Kitchen. He’s grown from a quiet team member into a trusted leader coworkers call “Mr. Dependable.”
His journey hasn’t been easy. Along the way, he learned how to adapt to different communication styles and lean on his faith each day. “Before, I was afraid to try new things,” Kevin said. “Now I’m not scared. I came a long way, and I’m thankful to be here.”
In 2020, Kevin was honored nationally with SourceAmerica’s President’s Award for Leadership, recognizing his commitment to growth and the example he sets for others. Today, he continues to build leadership skills and mentor teammates.
His proudest accomplishment has been moving out of his parents’ home and into a place of his own—a milestone made possible through years of hard work and the support from Lanakila Pacific’s inclusive employment programs. “People with disabilities need a chance to succeed,” says Kevin.
Rona Yagi Fukumoto, President and CEO of Lanakila Pacific, said it’s been an honor to watch Kevin flourish. “We’re proud of how far he’s come and know he’s ready for big risks. Whether he continues at Lanakila or takes on new opportunities, we know his future truly is limitless.”
Kevin’s story embodies the purpose of Lanakila Pacific’s social enterprises. As employees gain confidence and independence, the organization expands its ability to serve more people in the community. Kevin’s supervisor, Food Service Director Reid Yasunaga, has seen him advance through multiple promotions. He said, “People, given a chance, can thrive, and Kevin’s a great example of that. The world is his oyster right now.”
