Every week, Ella and her mom, Lorna, make their way to Lanakila Pacific’s Kupuna Wellness classes. When Ella first signed her mom up for the free program, she was simply looking for something fun and social to keep her mom active and engaged. But after learning more about the classes, she realized something else: “I’m a senior too.” From then on, she decided to join in, and for the past two years, they’ve attended side by side.

Kupuna Wellness provides a welcoming space where older adults can socialize, exercise, and try new things. Held at Aiea Public Library and Aiea United Methodist Church, the classes give participants a familiar setting to gather, play games like Bingo, enjoy warm meals with new friends, and take part in digital literacy workshops. Lorna enjoys spending time with other seniors and doing activities together. Ella, a retired art teacher, brings a creative touch to the program by leading art workshops. “I love being creative,” she said, adding that the program gives her an outlet to keep sharing that passion.

One of the most memorable moments for Ella was the day her mom had an accident and fell during class. “Everyone rushed to help her,” she said. “They really treat you like family here.” For Lorna, what stands out most is the quality time they spend together. “Ella always takes good care of me,” she said. “Every day is the best.”

Ella says the program has brought them closer and helped her become more patient with her mom. For Lorna, the highlight is being part of a community. “There’s always something to look forward to,” she said.

Kupuna Wellness create spaces where generations can grow together. For mother-daughter pairs like Ella and Lorna, it’s a chance to connect in new ways, learn from each other, and make memories that matter.
