Cheryl, a retired social worker, spent more than two decades helping others before seizures and diabetes made cooking difficult. When her doctor recommended Lanakila Meals on Wheels, she enrolled and finally felt what it was like to receive support herself.
“Once you try the food, you realize how good it is,” she said. “There’s a nice variety. The vegetables, whole grains, and proteins are all nutritious, easy to prepare, and just the right portion.”
The meals also support her daughter, Carly, who has faced serious health challenges of her own. “Lanakila Meals on Wheels helped me through my cancer journey,” Carly shared. “It gave me a sense of security knowing I didn’t have to cook for my mom. She was already getting good, healthy meals.”
Cheryl especially appreciates the convenient delivery. Her regular driver, Mike, calls before arriving and greets her with kindness. “He’s very reliable,” she said. “It makes getting the meals really nice.”
As she focuses on recovery, Cheryl is learning to accept the kind of help she once gave to others. With her meals taken care of, she can direct her energy toward healing by managing her diabetes, working to reduce seizures, and using food as medicine.
“When my blood sugar stays steady and I can walk a little more, that makes me happy,” she said. “One step at a time.”
