Jose didn’t have much experience when he first started as a trainee at Lanakila Custom Products twelve years ago. Through once-a-week, on-the-job training, he began learning the basics—running embroidery machines, folding shirts, and staying organized. “When I first started, I didn’t know much,” he said. “I was really new to this type of stuff.” But with guidance from his manager and coworkers, Jose gained confidence, learned to multitask, and built a steady routine.

Over time, that consistency led to his first full-time job. Today, Jose is an Embroidery Specialist at Lanakila Custom Products, where he helps produce professional, high-quality screen-printed and embroidered items for local businesses, schools, and community partners.

Custom Products is one of Lanakila Pacific’s social enterprises, meaning every order directly supports job training and employment for individuals with disabilities. That purpose isn’t lost on Jose. He shows up each day ready to contribute by prepping materials, operating machines, and doing whatever is needed to keep production moving. “We help each other whenever someone needs it,” he shared. “Working as a team makes everything easier.”

Jose is proud of how much he’s grown in managing stress, staying focused, and working toward his personal and professional goals. Early on, he struggled to multitask and stay calm under pressure. Now, he thrives during busy production days, staying composed even when deadlines are tight. His consistency and attention to detail have made him one of the most trusted members of the team.

And while Jose has a visual impairment, he doesn’t let that define what he can do. “To me, that’s not a barrier,” he said. “If you have a disability, it shouldn’t prohibit you from doing the things you want to do.”

Now more than a decade into his role, Jose continues to find meaning in his work and inspiration in the people around him. “I like meeting people, getting to know them, and working alongside them,” he said. His advice to others is simple and honest: “Do not let your disability discourage you because it’s only going to hold you back. Do not let it prevent you from doing jobs. Lanakila Pacific has helped me build independence.”

Every product that leaves the shop represents training, teamwork, and the belief that everyone deserves the chance to succeed.
