At Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam’s Hale Aina Dining Facility, Jessica shows up ready to serve with aloha. As a deaf employee, she’s overcome communication challenges to build strong relationships and help nourish hundreds of service members.

“I welcome customers with a smile, chop vegetables, and prepare the salads,” Jessica explained. Over time, she’s learned to read lips, practiced writing and speaking, and supports her deaf colleagues as they strengthen their communication skills. “We do our best to work together, respect each other, and avoid misunderstandings.”

Jessica’s journey reflects the impact of the AbilityOne Program, administered by SourceAmerica, which creates federal contract jobs for individuals with disabilities. Through the program, Lanakila Pacific has built a 28-person team at Hale Aina Dining Facility, where employees like Jessica gain skills, earn a steady income, and serve the community.

Food Services Manager Josiah Mageo says his favorite part of the job is seeing people grow. “We’re helping them achieve their goals—whether it’s learning how to drive or teaching others sign language so they can communicate better.” He describes Jessica as one of the hardest workers he’s seen, and a clear example of why inclusive workplaces matter. “A lot of people just look at the disability, rather than what these individuals can bring to the table. But they have work ethic, they contribute, and they’re part of the team.”

Now one of the longest-serving employees at the facility, Jessica says she’s proud of how far she’s come. “I’ve overcome a lot of hardships. I learned to survive and not give up on my goals.” The aloha she brings to work each day reflects the patience and support she’s received—and reminds us of what’s possible when people are given the chance to grow.
