At the Nuuanu YMCA, Lanakila Pacific Training Grounds is filled with the sounds of blenders, conversations between members and music from a nearby fitness class. The neighborhood cafe brings people together while giving those with disabilities hands-on experience and skills for careers in food service.
Raymond is a Barista in Training who hopes to become a chef. Over the past year, Training Grounds has helped him gain experience in food preparation, customer service and cafe operations while working toward that goal. He also helps newer participants learn the daily routines of the cafe. This summer, Raymond accepted a position at McDonald’s, where he’ll continue building on the experience he gained at Training Grounds.
“I want people to know Lanakila Pacific is a good place for quality training,” Raymond said. “If people are having a hard time or don’t know how to make a career plan, Lanakila can help them and train them to get to that point.”
Lead Cafe Trainer and Supervisor Brian Humber said Raymond has become one of the cafe’s most experienced team members.
“He’s really made a lot of progress since his first day,” Brian said. “He’s shown proficiency in all the different service areas and is able to interact with customers.”
Training Grounds is part of Lanakila Pacific Employment Services’ Paid Work Experience program. Participants learn food, beverage and business operations in a supportive setting while strengthening workplace habits, improving interpersonal communication skills, and preparing for employment.
As Training Grounds enters its second year, even more opportunities are brewing. “Our goal is to create more competitive integrated employment for individuals with disabilities,” said David Comfort, manager of Lanakila Pacific Employment Services. Raymond’s new job is one example of that vision in action as Lanakila Pacific continues welcoming more participants, strengthening employer partnerships and preparing individuals for careers in food service and other industries.
