At Lanakila Pacific Employment Services, participants build skills, confidence and independence through real-world work experiences. For Jaren, the program also revealed a career path he never expected.
After spending time away from the workforce, Jaren returned to Lanakila Pacific as a paid work trainee with plans to rejoin the Grounds Services team. As he worked alongside other participants, Employment Specialist II Kazuaki McArthur noticed how Jaren naturally encouraged his peers, stepped up during group activities and helped create a sense of connection within the program.
“I didn’t have to do much,” Kazu said. “I just opened the possibility up, and Jaren took it from there.” When Kazu suggested a future in coaching, Jaren was surprised. “I never thought it was possible,” he said.
Together, they explored ways for Jaren to build on those strengths. When a traditional job coach position was not yet the right fit, Lanakila Pacific created an opportunity for him to grow into the role as a Job Coach Aide. Today, Jaren helps participants develop workplace skills, supports lessons and continues learning alongside the people he serves.
“Working with the participants is the best part of my job,” Jaren said. Looking ahead, he hopes to help more people find employment and direction in their lives. His journey reflects the mission of Lanakila Pacific Employment Services: helping individuals discover their potential, build independence and create new opportunities for themselves and others.
