After a difficult childhood and time spent in a youth correctional facility as a teen, Lucky knew something had to change. Fortunately, he found the Ho‘okele Loea Education Program while looking for a way to rebuild his life and give himself a second chance. Reflecting on those early days, he said the biggest shift came from being surrounded by people who believed in him. “Finally, I can see myself with good company and start making my life better,” he said. “Nobody helped me before I joined the program, and I felt alone.”
Ho‘okele Loea, a program of Lanakila Pacific’s Employment Services, is a culturally grounded education program for at-risk youth between the ages of 14 and 24. The program supports individuals who are not in school or working by helping them develop job skills, strengthen values, and build confidence through real-life learning and cultural connection. By serving youth outside of the disability community, Ho‘okele Loea expands Lanakila Pacific’s reach to support young people who are striving for stability and a new direction.
With help from his Lanakila Pacific job coach, Lucky found work doing landscaping and construction. He began showing up consistently, learning hands-on skills, and growing more confident in himself and his future. “Being at the program is the happiest time of my life,” he said. “There are people supporting me.”
Throughout his time in the program, Lucky stayed focused on the bigger picture. He knew that the decisions he made now would affect the people closest to him. “If I go to jail, who will help my family?” he wondered. “My mom struggles too, and that is too much for her to carry.”
As his confidence grew, so did the support around him. Corrections facility staff shared letters with the court highlighting his progress and commitment. With encouragement from the program and a clear desire to change, Lucky was given the opportunity to stay on a better path. Today, he is working toward a more stable future and hopes to be a better son, friend, and member of his community.
Ho‘okele Loea means “a steersman for the stormy day.” The name reflects the program’s purpose of guiding youth through difficult circumstances with steady support and cultural grounding. By investing in young people who are ready to take the next step, Lanakila Pacific continues to strengthen individuals and the communities they call home.
