Born in Honolulu to a family from China, Lotus aspired to become a paramedic. Despite facing chronic injury and disabilities, she never gave up on her dreams. Throughout her life, Lotus encountered significant challenges, including mental health struggles and physical injury. However, she remained resilient and determined to overcome these obstacles.

Lotus’ journey took a transformative turn when she received a referral by the State’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to join Lanakila Pacific’s Employment Services program which helped nearly 190 individuals with disabilities explore employment opportunities in FY2024. Despite numerous challenges, Lotus persevered and finally found the guidance and encouragement that she needed. Through a paid work experience at Bishop Museum, Lotus gained confidence and learned to adapt to different environments and overcome her fear of people.

A pivotal moment came when Lotus’ job coach suggested that she try working at Lanakila Pacific. Embracing the opportunity, she thrived and eventually secured a permanent position as a Front Desk receptionist.  The compassion, acceptance, and friendship that she found at Lanakila Pacific reignited her drive to rebuild her life.

Today, Lotus enjoys a fuller life, walking her dog alone and engaging with others more openly. She cherishes the letters from Meals on Wheels recipients and Employment Services participants’ families, knowing she is part of an organization that make a real difference. At Lanakila Pacific, Lotus found the true meaning of community.
