On January 10, Bryant and Mahina from Lanakila Pacific Employment Services delivered compelling testimonies at the State Council on Developmental Disabilities’ legislative briefing. The event, held at the Hawaii State Capitol, aimed to raise awareness about the need for continued funding to support pathways to employment for people with disabilities.  Bryant and Mahina shared their personal journeys at Lanakila Pacific and the transformative impact the experience has had on their lives, while participants from Lanakila Pacific Teaching & Learning Centers showed their unwavering allegiance.

Bryant spoke passionately about how his paid-work experiences at Lanakila Custom Products and Lanakila Meals on Wheels have prepared him for his current role as an Administrative Assistant at Lanakila Disability Services. With determination, he gained confidence and became an asset to the team. Additionally, his computer literacy and interpersonal skills have been so helpful in fulfilling his dreams. He beamed with great pride for his job and a sincere appreciation for his co-workers who continually encourage him.

Mahina shared a similar success story as she too had advanced from a food service worker position at Hale Aina Dining Facility to a job coach with Lanakila Pacific Employment Services, a position that allows her to help other with a disability overcome barriers to employment.  She is a strong advocate for the organization’s mission to give everyone the opportunity to work.

Their stories of resilience and growth deeply moved everyone in the room, highlighting that everything is possible.  Bryant and Mahina surely made a persuasive case for the need for more discussion and support.
